Chapter Eight
Dimitri
The waitress set the plate down in front of me. Just staring at the double bacon cheeseburger with a toasted onion bun next to an obscenely large pile of fries had my stomach growling. She moved across the table where she deposited Anastasiaâs less impressive BLT with a side salad.
âMaybe if you hadnât polished off the third bag of thoseâ¦whatever you call them, you wouldnât have ruined your appetite for dinner,â I teased before popping a fry in my mouth.
We arrived in Ellensburg, the last major town before the motorway headed up into the mountain passes, just in time for dinner. Had I known it was a college town, I mightâve picked a different place to eat than the tavern on main street. It had started filling up with kids even before we made our order.
âIt isnât a real road trip unless you get a stomachache from the road trip snacks, now, is it?â Anastasia replied.
Our table sat near the front of the tavern, next to the windows. Anastasia kept her eyes outside and picked at her food. After our shopping trip earlier in the day, sheâd thawed, at least somewhat. She even stopped glaring at me. After holding such a sour expression for so long, it surprised me she could change it at all. But soon after we stopped here, she iced over again.
I held no illusions about our future together. We might have had an invigorating evening together before I knew who she really was and what Iâd have to do, but our marriage would be transactional with neither of us going into it without coercion.
The afternoon we spent chatting about next to nothing as the barren miles past had me wondering if we possibly had a happy future ahead of us. If I hadnât been so impatient to get back to London in the first place, and truly tried to seduce her in Butte before springing the truth on her, she wouldâve joined me willingly.
We ate in silence, at least our own. As the crowd in the bar grew, so did the noise level around us. I tuned most of it out, having no interest in rumors about who was hooking up with who and at which hall, or complaints about asshole professors, or how poorly the football team played last week.
A girl walked past our table to ear piercing squeals of surprise from the people sitting behind me who had been discussing the several embarrassing hookups of a man named Tate.
âI thought you were going home for a long weekend?â one of them asked the newcomer, âI wish I didnât have any Friday classes.â
âThereâs a snowstorm in the mountains,â the new girl replied, earning sympathetic sighs from her friends.
âExcuse me,â I said, turning, âI couldnât help but overhear, is the road closed because of the snowstorm?â
âNo,â the girl replied, letting out a giggle and playing with a lock of her hair, âbut chains are required, and I donât have any.â
âNeither do we,â I said, nodding to Anastasia.
